PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE | September 20

Emerging Leaders Institute

We’re gearing up for this year’s Emerging Leaders Institute – the ACM Foundation will be hosting twenty-two people in community radio, television and news from around the country in leadership training over four weeks in October.

It’s an exciting project, now in its third year. It would not be possible without the support of donors from across the US who have made charitable gifts to the Foundation last year.

Thank You.

We want to continue this work in coming years to grow the talent base in our field in communities big and small.  So, as we head into Fall, consider making a gift to the Foundation if you care about building the future of community media.

Click here to set up a recurring donation, or a first-time gift to support more leadership training in coming years – and be on the lookout for updates on this year’s ELI class this fall!

Jon Brodkin of Ars Technica

Jon Brodkin of Ars Technica this past week provided the best summary I’ve seen on what’s going on with the Biden Administration’s search for a new FCC Commissioner and what could be at stake if appointments aren’t made soon.  It’s worth the read.

NATOA Conference

I’ll be hosting a hangout at the Virtual NATOA Conference this week. If you’re attending, “stop by” and say hello!

RuPaul Charles

And Congratulations go to RuPaul Charles who is now the winningest person of color at the Emmy’s after picking up a sixth consecutive award for his daytime television show.  RuPaul tipped the metaphorical hat to his public access roots in Atlanta in an acceptance speech.

“I started in television 40 years ago on a public access station in Atlanta, Georgia. A little show called The American Music Show. They were so kind to me to have me do my hard yards there years ago, and I want to thank them for being so kind to me and all the people in this business who’ve been kind. I’ve got to tell you, the sweetness and the kindness is what I appreciate the most today. In fact, the sweetness and the kindness are at the top of my list of human virtues. After that would be a big fat ass. Thank you so much for this award.”

Follow that example and be kind this week!
