Advocacy in the Age of Covid-19: This workshop will provide insights into the need to communicate the importance of, and the challenges facing community media. We will focus on best practices in traditional and virtual advocacy, and come to understand that they are not all that different. We'll practice techniques and give participants the tools they need to advocate for their cause. Appropriate for staff, Board members, volunteers and donors who wish to advocate for your organization. Facilitator: Gerry Lederer, Best, Best & Krieger
Better Boards: Join presenters Gretchjen Clausing and Susan Malone as they talk with organizations that have built their boards over time to help their work succeed, and talk about principles for success as your organization goes about building better boards.
Building Community in a Virtual World: In the Pre-COVID era, our community building strategies were rooted in face-to-face gatherings: sharing food, space, time, and energy while collaborating on art-making and cultural organizing. When everything changed, how did our community-building programs change with it? Leaning in to the connective powers of technology and media, while re-discovering the power of the basic phone call, has helped find some answers. Together in this workshop, we will share some case studies from BRIC's Community Engagement programs, while posing questions to help us learn from one another. Community Partnerships in Times of Trauma and Beyond: Join Tyrone Copeland, Bianca Rhodes, Bonnie Schumacher & Julie Slotnik Sturn from BricArts Media in Brooklyn and SPNN in St Paul as they talk about how their partnership work has been affected by the multiple crises exposed and deepened by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Making the Case - How to Write the Essential Building Block for Fundraising: Case Statements are a fundamental part of fundraising of all types. They are also integral to your Board and your staff understanding the “Why,” “The Need,” and “How” you contribute to the communities your organization serves. They say what are your outcomes and impact and what you hope to do with the gift you are asking for – whether it’s an individual gift or a grant.
In this practical workshop, we will explore why case statements are necessary AND useful and what the elements of the best ones are. We’ll give advice on writing the case statement for your own proposals, and we will provide feedback on your work. At the end of the two-part workshop, participants will have draft case statements they can adapt and use in both staff and board training and in the fundraising work in their communities. Personnel Practice: Go beyond the legal requirements and explore what it takes to lead people involved with your organization to fulfill your mission requirements. This workshop will explore establishing a culture, working with organizational leadership, how your daily practices reflect your values, and how to keep everyone moving forward to meet a strategic vision. We'll talk about success stories and learnings from working with teams to give you ideas on how to keep your teams moving forward during uncertain and changing times. Re-visioning Community Media Centers- Building Relevance and Sustainability: Community Media Centers must operate at the convergence of technological change and local communication needs in order to stay relevant and financially sustainable. We’ll examine what it takes to create a road map for the future. In part one of this three-part seminar you learn about a planning process designed specifically for CMC’s that can help build relevance for a community media center, raise community awareness for the organization, examine board and governance changes that maybe needed, and build long term financial stability. Part two and three will focus on financial sustainability while staying true to the organizations’ mission and dealing with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on funding. We will explore six different categories of non-cable funding that have been successfully implemented in a variety of different size community as well as the similarities and differences between small, medium, and large and rural, urban, and suburban. Small Operations: This session will focus on the philosophy of working in a small shop from two perspectives and two different types of operations. Jon and Alan will share resources and equipment that makes it easier to do your job. They will also speak on the challenges of being in the role of a one person shop and tips to help with production. Youth Program Design: In this workshop, Xia and Ariel will cover the history, evolution, and best practices of Youth Program Design. Youth creators have always challenged us to rethink the way we view and interpret media. But how do we design programs that teach young people media skills, community building and critical thought processes? In this workshop, the presenters hope to share some tips on running, maintaining and succeeding in youth program design for community media stations. Presenters: Ariel Taylor, Xia Rondeau.
