Weekly News From the President: Tell Us About Your Primary Election Coverage
Community Media Day is Two Months Away
It’s August 20th…just two scant months away from Community Media Day 2019 on October 20th!
This is the third year community media organizations around the country will be celebrating the work we do with film festivals, open houses, concerts, proclamations and other special events.
What will you be doing?
Now is a good time to begin planning. You can get ideas and register as a partner online if you haven’t done so already!
I was on vacation this past week and was really impressed by the candidate coverage provided by our members in Hawaii for the primary that took place last Saturday.
Candidate and Primary Election Coverage
On Maui, for example, Akaku held a block party for their return coverage and aired candidate statements for all the statewide and county candidates on Hawaiian Public Radio.
What have you done for primary coverage in your community? Or what are you planning for September primaries still to come? Let me know by email.
Upcoming Opportunities to Hear Me Speak
A couple quick reminders: I’ll be talking with Report for America next Wednesday on our ACM webinar about how they are trying to place young journalists at organizations to grow journalism in America. The project got started this last year and they are looking for new organizations to partner with in 2019 – maybe even yours! Details below.
I’ll be doing a presentation next week at NATOA in Philadelphia on fundraising for community media along with Sue Buske from The Buske Group and Martin Jones of Metro East Community Media. Let me know if you’ll be in Philly so we can catch up!
Regional Conferences for Northeast and Central States
If you can’t make it to Philadelphia, I hope to see you in October at the NE Regional Conference in Schenectady, NY or the Central States Regional in Alliance, OH.
Support ACM’s Proposals for SXSW
And while you’re at it – be sure to vote for ACM at SXSW in Austin, TX! The voting on the SXSW PanelPicker goes through August 30th, and we want to make sure that community media is well represented!
ACM has put together two panel proposals for the SXSW education conference in Austin, TX for spring 2019. It’s part of our effort to promote community media to different communities across the country. SXSW has a voting procedure to help select panels and we’d like you to help us by clicking on the links below and selecting “up-vote” for our panels.
