Weekly News From the President: Why Local Media Matters
Why Local Media Matters
If you haven’t taken the two minutes to see the Deadspin compilation of Sinclair broadcasting editorials that aired this week view it here and then share it with as many people as you can.
The video is chilling, but not for the political content. Set aside political agendas for a while and consider that this is what “local” TV means in 2018. It’s why the FCC eliminated the main studio rule this past year, and why the Commission will probably promote the Sinclair takeover of Tribune company stations to give the broadcast giant more than 230 stations across the country.
Covering local stories and caring about local communities takes time and resources. It also isn’t in the interest of corporations that are looking to make economies of scale to meet their quarterly profit projections or promote their political agendas.
What can you do to fight that sameness – that homogenization – of the media landscape?
Strengthen your organization. Make sure distinctive media is on your channels, and then tell people who care that local media matters. If you don’t do that, I’m not exactly sure who will stand up for our own communities.
National Association of Broadcasters Show
If you’re at the NAB Show next week, I hope to see you amid the thousands of people wandering around Las Vegas. I’ll be visiting the Las Vegas Government Channel KCLV’s operation next Monday at 5:00 pm as they talk about Over-The-Top solutions and PEG and give a tour of their facility on 495 S Main Street.
If you want to come to the tour, you should RSVP with Cable Manager Mark Rosenberg at email@example.com.
ACM Public Policy Call is Thursday, April 5
A quick reminder our monthly Public Policy call is available to all members, including staff and volunteers such as board members. It’s a good way to get people up to speed on key legislative and policy issues affecting our field.
The next monthly call is this Thursday April 5 at 4:00 pm ET. If you want an invitation, please let me know at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Have a great week!
