Rules on Media Ownership to Loosen
On the heels of last month’s vote to eliminate the main studio rule for broadcasters, last Thursday the FCC voted to eliminate barriers to media cross-ownership and consolidation.
What does it mean?
Well, it means that holiday shopping for media conglomerates starts before this Black Friday. Already there are rumors of multiple bids for Charter Cable and there is a race to buy the entertainment assets from Rupert Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox.
What doesn’t it mean?
Any local investment for local information. There is absolutely no incentive in this media land rush to invest more in local channels that provide civic information and diversity voices. The only upside I can see is if you need an argument for why local communities need to invest in channels like yours: there’s never been a more clear case than now.
