Weekly News From the President: President’s Day Message
“With malice toward none, with charity for all…”
I know you’ve heard the words that begin the end of Abraham Lincoln’s second inaugural address, but listen to them on this President’s Day as you think about the work we do in our communities every day, as we create deliver media by and for the people.
Spoken four years into the Civil War and in anticipation of its end, the address comes from a very different time of conflict and a battle for justice and right. The tone could not be farther from the political tenor of our day.
“…with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in, to bind up the nation’s wounds, to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan, to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations.”
At a time when we are divided from ourselves, when political rhetoric is meant to demean and belittle, when American media institutions are slandered with the words “Enemy of the People,” I think of those words and the promise of our work to build, enlighten and heal community.
