Weekly News From the President: ACM Recognizes Senator Tammy Baldwin

ACM Recognizes Senator Tammy Baldwin
The ACM Special Recognition award recipient of 2017 is U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin for her dedication to community media in her public service work in Congress.  During our Annual Conference, ACM hosts an Awards Luncheon to honor the recipients. Due to her busy schedule, U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin won’t be able to attend our conference. Last week, several ACM board members and I met with her at her Washington DC office and presented the award to her in person.

During our conversation we talked with the Senator about the continued need for channels with vital local information, and the reduced number of journalists that are serving communities in Wisconsin and other states. She observed that even in the time she has been in Congress, the number of Wisconsin reporters covering federal issues in DC has been reduced to one, making the need for civic information is now more important than ever.

We will share some of Senator Baldwin’s thoughts at our Awards Luncheon on Friday during the 2017 Annual Conference.

Keynote Excitement
I hope you’re making arrangements for the Conference – there’s a lot to look forward to next month, but I’m really excited to hear from our Keynote speaker Dr. Tea Rozman-Clark of the project Green Card Voices (GCV).  Tea’s experiences as an immigrant from Yugoslavia, a country which tore itself apart because of ethnic hatred, has informed her media work as she connects people’s stories with their neighbors. We will feature one of GCV’s media installations at the conference. It’s a great example of the work we can all be doing to create media that builds community and bridges understanding: one of the key themes of this year’s event.

SPNN Open House and Welcome
I’m also looking forward to checking out Saint Paul Neighborhood Network’s (SPNN) new facility. I worked in the city for many years in some crazy conditions (the train station where there was no heat in a Minnesota winter comes to mind). That’s all changed now with the new facility they’ve moved into this last year in the Saint Paul Creative Enterprise Zone. The Open House and Welcome will be on the eve of the conference, Tuesday, July 11th from 6:00-8:00pm. There will be appetizers, cash bar and there will be food trucks AND production trucks from Twin Cities area access centers at the event you can tour as well!Mark your calendar, and we’ll see you in the Twin Cities: Minneapolis and St. Paul!

Sincerely,
