Weekly News from the President
Congratulations to the Grassroots Scholarship Winners
I want to congratulate our Grassroots Scholarship winners Zebulon Schmidt and Dana Sahae! They’ll both get travel assistance and free conference registration to attend the National Conference and Trade Show in Pasadena August 12-14.
Zebulon is the station manager of Open Stage Media, which runs community media channels in Schenectady, NY. He’ll be attending to get perspectives on how other communities run channels so he can improve the work Open Stage Media does back home.
Dana is the development and community outreach coordinator with Millbrae Community Television in Millbrae, CA. She’s in a new position with an organization that is just starting up their fundraising activity, and is looking to help grow the operation and prepare it for the future. She wants to learn about our industry and success stories to pave the way for success at her station.
I believe it’s essential that the Alliance provide opportunities to grow talented people and leaders like Zebulon and Dana who will chart the path for community media in the future. That’s why we’ve started the Mentor Network this year, and it’s why I want to encourage you, your staff and colleagues to join us this August in Pasadena.
There’s still plenty of time to register to join us at the Conference at a discounted rate. Go here to register and plan your trip to ACM National!
And a big thank you to the Inclusion, Equity and Engagement Caucus for supporting their travel!
The FCC has opened the docket for filings in the proposed Charter – Time Warner – Brighthouse Networks mergers. You can find the documents and filings they are considering here.
ACM, public interest groups and local governments are concerned about the merger, about the size and power of the “New Charter” and about Charter’s commitment to the public interest and PEG. We will keep members posted on upcoming deadlines and what you can do to help preserve community media in the wake of yet another proposed mega-merger.
