Primary Responsibilities:

The Utility Reform Network (www.turn.org) seeks a PolicyVoice Organizer to coordinate and implement organizing campaigns that elevate the voices diverse low–income communities to promote policies at the California Public Utilities Commission and state legislature that advance the public interest, i.e., affordable renewable energy, low–income discounts for energy and telephone bills, limitations on smart meters, access to basic phone and broadband, consumer protections against shut–offs—and fight policies that promote the corporate interest.

 

Working in partnership with the Organizing Director and other staff this position is responsible for coordinating both external PolicyVoice campaign activities and for complaint resolution for individuals who contact the TURN Hotline seeking advice.

Areas of Responsibility

The successful candidate for this position will have demonstrated expertise and experience in winning grassroots organizing campaigns, with a proven record of success in mobilizing participation from racially diverse communities, advocacy organizations, and opinion leaders. This is a roll-up your sleeves, take responsibility position that requires an experienced, energetic, efficient, self-directed and multi-capable individual with the capacity to work independently as well as accept guidance and direction from staff and consultants.

1. Complaint Resolution: Coordinate a system for individual consumer advocacy that integrates the resolution of individual complaints as part of a larger strategy to involve consumers in organizing campaigns.

2. Grassroots Mobilization: Coordinate membership recruitment and grassroots mobilization activities that result in people across California attending and speaking at CPUC Public Participation Hearings, CPUC Public Meetings, and Community Town Halls.

3. Online Activism: Participate in developing and coordinating an online advocacy strategy to mobilize letters of support for TURN policy initiatives to policy makers, increase participation in TURN events, and drive traffic to the TURN and PolicyVoice websites.

4. Leadership Development: Implement a leadership development strategy to build the capacity of TURN activists to become leaders in recruiting other members, volunteering their time, and representing the organization to the media and the public.

5. Coalition Building: Cultivate and mobilize PolicyVoice campaign participation from grassroots organizing projects, faith–based organizations, social service providers, community–based organizations, and policy advocacy groups across the state.

6. Public Officials Accountability: Solicit support for TURN policy agenda from elected andmappointed policy officials through organizing delegation visits, delivering policy briefings, distributing educational materials, and keeping in regular contact.

7. Resource Development: Increase funding and political support for organizing campaigns and policy objectives by drafting grant proposals and reports, writing articles and program reports for TURN publications, and producing program related materials.

 8. Special Projects: Other organizational activities as assigned by supervisor.

Experience Required:

1. Minimum of two years experience as an organizer with a track record of winning
campaigns through—resolving individual complaints, mobilizing grassroots participation,
motivating online action, developing leaders, building coalitions, holding public officials
accountable, and developing resources.
2. Demonstrated commitment to racial justice and progressive social change and experience
working in multiracial and multilingual organizations.
3. Strong written, verbal, and online communication skills.
4. Flexibility and willingness to work on evenings and weekends as necessary.
5. Willingness to work out of town one week or more a month as necessary.
6. Valid California drivers license.
7. Bilingual Spanish–English verbal and writing skills are highly desirable.

Reporting and Supervision
1) The PolicyVoice Organizer reports to the TURN Organizing Director.
2) Assists in supervising organizing interns and volunteers.
